Nigeria Senate, Thursday told the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing to direct Yola Electricity Distribution Company of Nigeria to facilitate restoration of electricity to the windstorm affected community in Jalingo metropolis of Taraba state.

In a motion sponsored by Senator Shaibu Isa Lau representing Taraba North Senatorial district, the chamber adopted a motion urging communication service providers to reinforce their masts.

Lau described the disaster as unprecedented that led to loss of five persons and destruction of property.

Recall that since the disaster three weeks ago, Jalingo metropolis has been in total darkness as several electricity poles and communication masts have fallen down.

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (Taraba South) blamed wind and rainstorm disaster as man made, saying: “People fell trees that would have served as wind breaker.”

He condemned arbitrary felling of trees for economic reasons in the state.

Contributing, Senator Oluremi Tinubu recalled how Senator Sam Egwu brought a similar motion, saying that environmental disasters have become rampant.

She pointed out that extra budget might be needed to tackle the problems, urging the chambers to look at the trend from the global warming.

Senate also resolved that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) should provide relief materials to the affected persons.
