Senate determined to end fuel scarcity

The Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream Sector has embarked on tour of depots to get first hand information with a view to ending persistent fuel scarcity across the country.

Vice Chairman of the committee on Downstream Sector, Senator Jubril Barau, who visited Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Kaduna area office, said the senate would do everything within its constitutional power to solve the lingering fuel crisis, which had brought untold hardship to Nigerians.

He said the present administration and other stakeholders in the oil sector were committed to bringing succour to Nigerians, adding that the fuel scarcity must be resolved.

Barau, however, called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and its subsidiaries to embark on more public enlightenment to educate Nigerians on the happenings in the sector and guard against vandalism for the nation’s refineries to work effectively.

“Senate is to work hand in hand with President Muhammadu Buhari and other stakeholders to end and find a lasting solution to re-occurring fuel scarcity across the country”, he said.

Earlier, Area Manager, Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Kaduna area office, Alhaji Robo Shuaibu, said the refinery was not running due to non supply of crude oil, calling on the National Assembly to enact a law that would ensure the judiciary’s speedy trial of vandals who broke pipelines, thereby sabotaging national economy.

Shuaibu called on the federal government to replace old pipelines with modern technologies and intervene in the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), leadership crisis, which he identified as one of the factors responsible for fuel shortage.

Other factors identified by the Area Manager include diversion of petroleum products by marketers to other areas, selling the products above government approved prices and encroachment on the pipelines by Nigerians, thereby affecting the free flow of the products.
