Senate declines request for extension of emergency rule

The Senate has turned down the request by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend the state of emergency imposed on three North-eastern states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno in the wake of violent activities of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The president on the same day forwarded a letter to the National Assembly for approval of the extension.

The Senate, at yesterday’s sitting was divided over the presidential request for the extension, necessitating today’s decision.

The House of Representatives is also billed to reconvene for a special plenary tomorrow to deliberate on the presidential request for the extension.

It is left to be seen what impact the senate’s refusal will have on the war on terror if they adhere to their current decision.

Details to follow soon…
