Senate confirms four out of five CBN non-executive directors

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed four out of five non-executive director nominees for the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, who were screened by its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Financial Institutions.

In a report submitted by the committee’s chairman, Senator Rafiu Adebayo, to the plenary on Thursday, one of the nominees, Dr. Abdu Abubakar was said to have unresolved issues due to petition against him.

Senator Adebayo urged the Senate to step down confirmation of Abdu Abubakar, which he said was in accordance with the laws of the federation of Nigeria.

He said, “That the Senate do receive and consider report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions on screening for confirmation of the following persons as non-executive directors of the Board of Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Those confirmed are: Professor Ummu Ahmed Jalingo; Professor Justicia Odinakachukwu Nnabuko; Professor Mike I. Obadan; Adeola Adetunji.

Contributing, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu suggested that Abubakar, a nominee of North-West should not be rejected outright, stating that the committee should be allowed to review the petition.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, I want to say that the committee should go back and review the petition which I think is in line with our laws,” he said.

In his ruling, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, confirmed those who were cleared while he adopted the motion that the petition against Abubakar be looked into again.
