Senator Abdul Ningi, chairman of the Senate Committee on SURE-P has queried the non-completion of the East-West Road despite the huge amount of money that has gone into it.
He spoke at the implementation verification meeting of the 2014 Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment Programme budget on Tuesday in Abuja.
Senator Ningi said: “The East-West road is a national project and it has been attracting funding for more than 10 years. The level of implementation of this road leaves much to be desired.
“I think that those who are saddled with the responsibility of making sure the East-West Road is completed must see it as a cardinal objective of this government.”
He promised that the committee would not rest until ongoing road projects in the country were completed.
Speaking further at the meeting, the vice chairman of the committee, Sen. Ganiyu Solomon berated the attitude of beneficiaries of mass transit SURE-P intervention programme in the FCT in paying back the loan despite the fact that the loans did not attract interest.
He, however, called on the federal government not to relent in making sure Nigerians, especially residents of FCT have easy access to mass transit buses.
He said, “We have taken note of that and we will still make provisions for more transit buses because at the end of the day, government must rise to that responsibility.
“Government cannot come up with excuses because some people are not paying up. We have to make sure we put more buses on the road”.
