The eighth Senate has constituted a 38-man committee to commence a fresh process of amending the 1999 constitution.
While announcing the setting up of the committee during Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the committee would be headed by the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.
Saraki, who urged members of the committee to gather facts from stakeholders within the country as part of the process, charged them to concentrate on matters that would de-emphasise recurrent expenditure.
He said,“With the composition of the committee, the senate has set the stage for the activities leading to the delivery of better governance to our people,”
“The work already carried out by the seventh senate has made the job of the new committee easier.”
Saraki went on to aver that constitution amendment remains a priority of the eighth senate.
