Senate begins investigation on attacks on Nigerians in Bakassi Peninsula

Nigeria Senate has raised concerns over breach of treaties by Cameroonian government regarding the Nigerians living in Bakassi Peninsula.

In a sponsored motion by Senator Rose Oko representing Cross River North Senatorial district on Thursday, the lawmaker noted that judgement given to Cameroonian government on 29th March, 1994 over status of Bakassi Peninsula by International Court of Justice was with agreement which was being breached.

Referring to the ‘Green Tree Agreement,’ Oko said: “Nigeria nationals living in the Bakassi Peninsula shall not be forced to leave the zone or change their nationality.”

“Take necessary measure to protect Nigerians nationals living in the zone from any harassment or harm.”

Contributing, Senate Minority leader, Godswill Akpabio stated that Nigeria government has failed in its responsibility for abandoning Bakassi citizens.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, Nigeria government has failed for abandoning Nigerians living in Bakassi Peninsula,” he said.

He asked the National Assembly to investigate heinous crimes by Cameroonian government, adding that as fishermen, they were asked to be paying N100,000 before they are allowed to harvest on seas.

Meanwhile, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki asked the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs to investigate the report and revert to the Chambers in two weeks.
