The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, adjourned plenary, to the next legislative day, following the death of a member of House of Representatives, Hon. Sani Bello.
The Senate, like their counterparts at the Reps, had just resumed from a 3-week break, where they received Heads of MDAs of federal government on budget defense.
Barely 10 minutes into the resumed session on Tuesday, the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio drew the attention of the Senate to the death of Hon. Sani Bello Mashi, representing Dutsi/Mashi federal constituency of Katsina state.
The motion was seconded by the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawal.
The Senators, before adjourning plenary in respect of the death, also rose to observe a minute of silence in honour of their departed colleague.
Meanwhile, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, officially read the letter of extension of vacation transmitted to the Senate by President Muhammad Buhari.
The letter which was dated 5th February 2017, reads in part: “I am therefore, notifying the Distinguished Senate, that I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled.”
Also, the Senate President read 2 different correspondences from the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
The letters dated 7th of February, 2017, conveyed the nomination of Mr. Adeyinka Asekun as a non career Ambassadorial nominee from Ogun State; while the other letter sought the confirmation of Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen (CFR) as Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The Lawmakers, however, resolved to an executive session, where, the leadership of the Senate is currently having interface with various chairmen of the Senate standing committees, for feedback from the 3-week budget defense.
