SDP suspends 17 LG chairmen, gives reason

The Social Democratic Party in Abia state has suspended the seventeen local government areas chairmen of the party in the state over anti-party activities.

Chidi Nwosu, the chairman of SDP in Abia State, who announced this in a press conference in Umuahia on Monday, explained that the suspension followed a directive by the national leadership of the party.

DAILY POST had reported that the seventeen local government chairmen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abia State had before the just concluded governorship election in the state, adopted the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate and the incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, as their sole candidate for the March 9 elections.

Addressing newsmen at the NUJ Abia Press centre in Umuahia, the state capital, the spokesman of the 17 SDP LGA chairmen, Mr. Chijioke Ozems, stated that their adoption was based on the need to have peace in the state, which according to him, can only be achieved if equality is maintained by allowing Ikpeazu to finish his second term.

But, the state leadership Social Democratic Party, SDP, leadership in the state, dismissed the purported adoption of Ikpeazu by the 17 LG chairmen of the party.

According to Nwosu, “The leadership of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in Abia state after our enlarged meeting last week, has resolved to announce to the public that the seventeen LG chairmen of SDP have been suspended over anti-party activities.

“You will recall that the chairmen, knowing we have a governorship candidate that emerged from primaries, took undemocratic step and purportedly adopted the PDP candidate, incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as sole candidate of the party (SDP).

“We have suspended them as directed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of our party. A disciplinary committee has been set up to investigate and recommend an appropriate action that should be taken against them if they are found culpable of any offence”.
