Scores feared dead as teenage suicide bomber hits near Kano mosque

Scores were killed and several others injured after an explosion went off near a Mosque in Kano on Monday.

According to witnesses, the casualty figure could not be ascertained immediately, although a police spokesperson said the teenage female suicide bomber has been confirmed dead.

The spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, Magaji Majiya, said the teenage bomber detonated the explosive at 9:30 p.m Monday after she was prevented from accessing the Umar Bin Khatab Mosque along Zaria Road.

The incident happened just as Muslim faithful were dispersing after observing the late night (Tarawih) prayer.

“She was trying to cross over to the mosque, but she was stopped,” Mr. Majiya said.

“She immediately detonated the bomb and died immediately,” the police boss said.

This is coming barely 24 hours after a similar attack on a restaurant and a mosque in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The incident left no fewer than 44 persons dead and 48 others injured.

Similarly, another attack was carried out on a church in Potiskum, Yobe State, also on Sunday, killing six people in the process.

At the moment, no one has claimed responsibility of the recent attacks.
