Scores escape death as trailers collide along Asaba-Benin expressway


No fewer than 17 persons on Sunday, reportedly escaped death when a trailer load of cement with registration number- Kogi JMU31XA allegedly crashed into another trailer after its brake failed along Asaba-Benin Expressway, Punch reports.

According to reports, some persons including members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and commuters waiting for vehicles travelling to Benin/Lagos, were among those that escaped.

An unnamed eyewitness said the trailer deviated from its lane around the mechanic village along the expressway heading towards Benin and crashed into a trailer loaded with drinks.

One Francis Brown, a patron of the mechanic village and the Hausa community reportedly disclosed that from February to date, the spot had recorded the death of 23 persons either due to head-on collision or brake failure.

Brown, however, called on the state government and authorities concerned to relocate the mechanic village to avoid further incident of ghastly motor accidents and incessant deaths.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident, said the accident occurred about 7:30 a.m on Sunday.

The PPRO also reportedly confirmed that no life was lost.
