Saraki
Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki on Thursday charged workers of the National Assembly to shun corruption, inefficiency and bureaucratic delays in the discharge of their duties.
Saraki stated this when the leadership of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), National Assembly chapter, visited him in Abuja.
The Senate President acknowledged that the workers were key to the success of the 8th Senate, saying that the upper chamber under his leadership would continue to make issues of staff welfare a top priority.
He said that while the Senate is ready to provide the conducive environment necessary for the staff to deliver on their mandate, the Senate in turn expect managers of its bureaucracy to reciprocate the gesture through hardwork and dedication to their duties.
Saraki said: “I want to also urge you to tell your members, particularly in this time of change that we have all fought hard for the change that ushered in the new government during the last elections, that we must change from the way things were done in the past. We must avoid bureaucratic delays, we must avoid inefficiency and we must shun corrupt practices.
“These things are important. It is important for us to accept that things cannot be done the way it used to be. We will do our best to give you conducive and enabling environment so that the hardship that some of you are going through will be reduced and in return, we will expect productivity, we will expect that things are done differently.”
The Senate President added that the 8th Senate is determined to work hard and that the unalloyed support of the workers is needed to enable it succeed.
He said: “More importantly, please go back and charge your colleagues that we must work very hard to bring result to the great people of Nigeria that are yearning for change and as you do that, I am sure that what you need for your own welfare will be addressed,” Saraki said.
Earlier, Chairman of the National Assembly branch of PASAN, Comrade Bature Musa, said the emergence of Saraki as the Senate President has been of great blessing to all members of the union.
He specifically thanked the Senate President for his kind gesture towards the Muslim members of the association during the Ramadan fast and urged him to extend same to the Christian members during their festivities.
Musa said: “It is important to note that what you have started here can change the nation because when you change the life of one person, you have changed the life of a family.
“Imagine your Excellency, when you change the lives of every family in the National Assembly, you have changed the entire life of a nation because the National Assembly as an arm of the government is the only organization that has full representative of every unit, ward and constituencies across the country living under one roof.”
