Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Thursday inaugurated a Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance, with Senator Babajide Omoworare as Chairman.

In his inaugural speech, he called on the executive arm of g‎overnment to ensure implementation of laws and resolutions of the legislative arm ‎for the growth of democracy.

He noted that it was the first time‎ the Nigeria Senate was establishing a committee saddled with responsibility of ensuring compliance to its laws‎.

“This Committee is the newest of all committees of the Senate, but critical in its responsibilities. They would monitor agencies of government and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with legislative resolutions”, Saraki said.

The Chairman of Committee, Senator Babajide Omoworare in his response cited section 62(1) of 1999 constitution as amended as the basis with which the Committee was formed by the 8th Senate.

He maintained that lack of implementation of resolutions o‎f the Senate by the executive had been worrisome, stressing that its Committee had jurisdiction to ensure compliance.

“‎As we are all aware, one of the most debated issues confronting the National Assembly since return to democracy in 1999 is the implementation of resolutions of the legislature by the executive arm of government. This ‎is an avowed determination to ensure that this matter is promptly handled”, Omoworare maintained.
