Saraki: Afenifere speaks on Presidency’s alleged move to forcefully open Senate

The Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere has condemned the alleged move by the Presidency to reconvene the Senate.

Afenifere said it will amount to “political gangsterism” and a return of military dictatorship if the Presidency forcefully reconvenes the Senate.

Following the alleged clampdown on the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu by security operatives last week, the Senate has embarked on an emergency recess.

Speaking with Daily Independent, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin insisted that the Presidency lacked the powers to reconvene the Senate.

Odumakin warned that such action will lead to the end of democracy in Nigeria.

According to Odumakin, “They lack such power and it will be political gangsterism carried to the extreme for the executive to now go and reconvene the Senate.

“Gradually, we are descending into a dictatorship which shouldn’t be since we are not under the military.

“So, I don’t think they want to carry out such act, but if they do, then that will be the end of democracy and we will be back to martial rule and military dictatorship.”
