Rustling: Kano State Government spends N10m on upkeep of recovered cattle


The Kano State government has said the committee set up by the state to return rustled cattle to their rightful owners has, so far, spent over N10 million on the feeding of the recovered animals.

The Chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Local Government Affairs in the state, Alhaji Murtala Garo, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Monday, noting that part of the money was also used for the purchase of drugs used for the treatment of the animals as well as ensuring their security.

“The committee has so far verified 816 persons out of whom 189 persons have since collected their animals.

“We must commend the state government for providing the money being used to feed the animals as government has directed that no single Kobo should be collected from owners of the animals”, he said, stating that the committee has so far received 3, 366 cows, 396 sheep, 11 camels, seven donkeys and four dogs recovered from rustlers. Garo further explained that committee had returned 2, 620 cows to their rightful owners out of the 3, 366 cows recovered from the rustlers in the state.

According to him, the committee had also returned 199 sheep, three donkeys and two dogs out of the 396 sheep, seven donkeys and four dogs recovered from the hoodlums.

Commending various security agencies in the state for their support and cooperation to the committee, the committee chairman also thanked the state government for providing the money used for the upkeep of animals.
