Row in NIMASA as FG orders Acting DG Obi to vacate post; appoints Jauro

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has announced the appointment of Mr. Haruna Baba Jauro as the new Acting Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency.

The appointment was communicated through a letter issued by the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Isichei Osamgbi, NIMASA Deputy Director/Head Public Relations, in a statement issued in Lagos at the weekend said Jauro takes over from Barrister Calistus Obi, who was appointed only four days ago.

It said until his appointment, Jauro was the Executive Director, Finance and Administration in the Agency and brings over two decades experience in the public sector and the maritime industry to his new responsibility.

An accountant by profession, Jauro, who hails from Yobe State, holds Higher National Diploma in Accounting from the Kaduna Polytechnic as well as a Post Graduate Diploma and an MBA both from the University of Maiduguri.

The Acting DG, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administrators is also a Certified National Accountant.

DAILY POST gathered that Obi was asked to leave the post on basis of seniority. Although Obi and Jauro, were appointed the same day (July 24, 2012), Jauro was the first person to report for work.

According to Civil Service rules, Jauro is the senior of the two, hence his confirmation as Acting DG.

Jauro, it was gathered, sent a formal complaint to the Ministry of Transport as well as Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

The protest letter was acted upon and the Presidency was said to have ordered that the right thing be done.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari fired and directed ex-NIMASA DG, Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, to hand over to the most senior officer.

The Ministry of Transport, now accused of not carrying out thorough background check, backed Akpobolokemi’s hand over to Obi.

This created confusion at the agency with officials in NIMASA, the Ministry and some highly-placed Nigerians pressuring the Presidency to confirm Jauro as Acting DG to avoid looming leadership crisis.

Obi is expected to revert to his former position as Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services.

Obi, 51, hails from Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He studied Law at the University of Nigeria Nsukka and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991 after completing studies at the Law School.

Obi holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), member of the International Bar Association (IBA), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, among other professional associations.
