Rooney ends drought with hat-trick as United qualify for Champions League proper

Wayne Rooney ended his 878-minute drought with a hat-trick, as Manchester United crushed Club Brugge 4-0 at home, to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

The Red Devils ran out 3-1 winners in the first leg played at Old Trafford and never looked in danger of missing out of Europe’s biggest club competition.

Memphis Depay set up Rooney for his first goal with a brilliant run and pass, before the England captain grabbed two more. Ander Herrera made it 4-0 and there was time for substitute Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez to miss from the penalty spot.

Louis van Gaal’s men go straight into Thursday’s draws, while Brugge are relegated to the Europa League.
