Wayne Rooney has said that he would love to pay Cristiano Ronaldo back for that World Cup wink.
Ronaldo was clearly delighted when his then Manchester United team-mate was sent off for kicking out at Ricardo Carvalho, as England’s 2006 dream came crumbling in Gelsenkirchen.
Although Rooney admits it was his worst moment in a Three Lions shirt, he insists he held nothing against Ronaldo, but was looking forward to getting his own pound of flesh.
“I spoke to him straight after the game. I knew it was ging to be portrayed as ‘we’d fallen out’ and we had to make sure that that didn’t happen for Manchester United’s sake,” Rooney said.
“There was never an issue for me. I understood why he did it. He was trying to win for Portugal.
“If it was the other way round, I’d probably do it to him, too, yes!
“I want to win for England. I remember in the first half, saying to the referee that he was diving and trying to get him to give him a yellow card.
“That happens. Players speak to the referee, which isn’t always highlighted. It does happen. But as soon as it was over, we were back as team-mates at United.”
