Ronaldo moves close to Raul’s record with 300th goal for Real Madrid

On Wednesday night, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 300th goal for Real Madrid, in a battling 2-0 win over city rivals Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo headed Carlo Ancelotti’s men in front in the second half, before setting up James Rodrigues to seal the victory, as they ensured the gap between them and Barcelona remains four points.

It was an evening that ended in controversy for the Portugal captain, as he was booked for diving by referee Mario Melero Lopez. The booking means the 30-year-old will be suspended for Eibar’s visit this weekend.

Ancelotti, however, defended his star player and confirmed the club will appeal the yellow card he got.

“I told the referee that everyone saw it was a penalty,” Ancelotti said after the game.

“I told him it was incredible that he didn’t award a penalty and that he showed Cristiano the yellow card. We will appeal.”

Ronaldo is closing in on Madrid’s all-time top scorers Raul (323) and Alfredo Di Stefano (308).
