Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Roma, in their Champions League round of 16 clash, took the forward’s tally for the season to 40 goals in all competitions.
The 31-year-old struck in the 64th minute, sweeping home Lucas Vazquez’s cut-back from close range.
27 of Ronaldo’s 40 goals have come in La Liga, while 13 have been scored in Europe.
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has 35 goals in 35 appearances so far.
Last season, Ronaldo netted 61 times in all competitions, four more than Messi. The Portugal captain has now hit 40 goals in each of his last six seasons at Madrid.
