The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified Gernot Rohr’s role at the home-based Super Eagles’s camp in Kano, insisting he is only advising, while Salisu Yusuf is fully in charge of the team.
Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Christopher Green, confirmed this in an interview with Complete Sport.
“Salisu is in charge of the home based Super Eagles. He picked the team and will decide who plays and who will not. Rohr is there on advisory role and will not take charge of the team as being touted,” Green said.
“Of course, we expect Rohr, as the national team technical adviser, to also scout for the fledgling players who could be invited to the main Super Eagles for the World Cup clash against Cameroon.”
Green also confirmed the arrival of an expatriate goalkeeper trainer, Enrico Pionetti, in Kano, adding that the Italian coach will work with Aloy Agu and the four goalkeepers in camp.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation. Dr. Sanusi Mohammed, has assured that the Super Eagles will not underrate their Benin Republic counterparts when they meet in a two-legged qualifier for 2018 CHAN tournament.
“We are putting every thing in place to ensure that we win the two legged games and qualify for CHAN proper. The players are happy in camp and well motivated to get results and qualify for the championship.
“The idea is to qualify first before thinking about winning the cup. It is step by step. We want to win CHAN of course, but we have to qualify first. We are grateful to Kano state government for agreeing to camp the Eagles and host the second leg match,” he said.
