Rodgers says Sturridge out of season, eyes new striker

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, has admitted that striker Daniel Sturridge, may miss the rest of the season because of injury.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City player has been plagued by injuries this season and has not played for the Reds since their 1-0 win over Blackburn in the FA Cup this month.

“It’s been difficult,” Rodgers said. “Daniel is a good lad who wants to play and work and help the team but it’s been one of those seasons for him.

“He’s been very unfortunate and we’ll have to monitor day-by-day and see where he’s at. When he’s been fit, he’s been brilliant, it’s just getting him back on a consistent basis. Whether that’s this season, or pre-season, has to be seen.”

Rodgers also hinted that he will be trying to get a striker when the transfer window opens, despite having Sturridge, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert at his disposal.

“It’s certainly an area we need to address come the summer. We have a top class striker here in Daniel but he also needs help.

“Defensively, we’ve been strong. But the critical area, goal scoring, is something we need to improve upon.”
