The Enugu State Police Command on Thursday arrested a burglar who was breaking and stealing from a shop in Oji River.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this was contained in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ebere Amaraizu.
Amaraizu said in the statement that the suspect was caught by a team of police operatives and neighbourhood vigilantes while he was robbing an office plaza in Oji River community in the state.
According to the statement, the incident happened on June 18 at about 1am in the Oji River community, the headquarter of Oji River Local Government Area.
Amaraizu said that the suspect identified as one Ifeanyi Eze hailed from Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra.
He said, “The suspect had allegedly broken into an office by breaking the wall of the said office plaza in the midnight and carted away desk top computers.
“”And the suspect was allegedly breaking the safes in the office looking for money before he was caught in the act.
“Items recovered from the suspect include desk top computers and an axe, which he allegedly used in breaking the walls of offices in the plaza and gaining entry.”
The police spokesman noted that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Balarabe, had ordered for an investigation and diligent prosecution of the suspect after investigation.
In a related development, he said that one Ogbonna Chukwuma, a suspected hoodlum of Zone 5 Iva Pottery in Enugu, was on June 14 nabbed in the Holy Ghost axis by the rail line by police operatives of the Central Police Station, Enugu.
Amaraizu said it was gathered that the suspect had allegedly robbed a victim of his A16 I-tel phone at the rail line axis.
He said that unknown to the suspect there was presence of plain-cloth detectives keeping the place under surveillance.
”He was promptly arrested and the stolen item recovered from him together with some amount of money and the iron rod and broken bottle he used to commit the crime,” he said.
The police spokesman said that the state commissioner of police had also directed intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering of the area.
