Rivers State records 500 cases of child molestation in 12 months

Rivers State has recorded over five hundred cases of defilement and child molestation within the last 12 months.

The state branch of International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, disclosed this in an interview with DAILY POST in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

FIDA also revealed that child defilement and molestation was on the increase in the State with a record of at least 10-15 cases every week.

Secretary of FIDA in Rivers State, Nnenna Igbokwe, said child defilement cases were more prevalent in rural areas of the state, adding that a survey by FIDA shows that Buguma town in Asari-Toru Local Government area has the highest number of pedophile cases.

Igbokwe called for partnership between non-governmental organizations and governments in enlightening the public on the dangers of child violation and molestation.

According to her, “The case is increasing and that is because of the awareness that has been created so people are beginning to come out to report their cases.

“The case is too much especially in the rural areas. For instance, in Buguma we have had more than 10-15 cases in a week where you see a ten year old being raped by a forty year old man. A two year old being defiled by a 30 year old man. This is alarming.

“We used to think that this thing has reduced but unfortunately it is not so. I can tell you that from January to this December there has been over 500 cases of child defilement in Rivers state alone.
