Rivers State Government moves to stop funding Police in the state

The Rivers state government has declared that it may likely stop funding the state police since the essence of the funding is no longer justified. This statement came, following the abduction of three NYSC members in the state.

The Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi stated this when the Governing Chairman of NYSC, Gordon Bozino and other delegates payed him a courtesy call in Government House, Port Harcourt.

Amaechi also used the opportunity to call for the redeployment of the police Commissioner, Mbu Joseph Mbu, accusing the police boss of dining with politicians for political reasons.

He also lamented that the returning cases of crime and insecurity will hamper development in the state.

He said,”Talk to the IG, talk to the President, talk to those people in Abuja that our Commissioner of police and Port Harcourt is becoming unsafe and that youth corps members were kidnapped. If it turns out that we must stop funding the police, of course we will stop. The person you brought here is a politician.

“He attends political meetings and there is no way you can stop that. My fear is that it is intended to kill the economy of Port Harcourt. Rivers state cannot be claiming that it has a brother in Bayelsa and their intention is to kill our economy. I have to call for the removal of the Commissioner of Police.”

Meanwhile, the governing board chairman of the NYSC, Gordon Bozino has called for the immediate release of the kidnapped corps members. He also called on security agencies to close-up the security in the state to forestall similar cases in other states.

According to him,”Three of our corps members were kidnapped. If Port Harcourt is a sort of threat like the North, they will begin to avoid Rivers state the way they avoided Borno and Yobe. I have the intention of talking with the IG when I get back to Abuja specifically on this issue so that proper arrangement should be made especially where we have corpers lodge.”

It will be recall that three corps members serving at Ogonokom comprehensive secondary school, Abua-Odual Local government council, Rivers state were kidnapped on the early hours of saturday. A report that has been confirmed by the police.
