Rivers re-run: Wike inaugurates Commission of Inquiry

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has inaugurated a 7-man Judicial Commission of Inquiry to unravel and investigate the causes of electoral violence during the March 19 re-run Legislative election in the State.

Governor Wike, while swearing-in the panel, charged them to among other terms and references, ascertain those who were the victims of killings in the state.

The Governor tasked the commission to identity the course of the violence, find the perpetrators of the acts and put them to book.

He said, “it is very important that the commission should identify what went wrong. We are aware that properties were damaged, so we need to know the value. We also want to have the names of the victims of the violence. The commission is also expected to ascertain if the violence was localised or state-wide. Just help us get to the roots and know the cause of those crisis.”

Chairman of the Commission, Justice Monimah Danagogo of the High Court in Port Harcourt commended the Governor for giving him and his members the opportunity to serve the state.

Justice Danagogo said, “we thank the Governor for giving us this opportunity. We promise to faithfully carry out this assignment without fear of favour. We promise to be diligent in this assignment.”

The commission has four weeks to submits its report.
