The Rivers state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, on Wednesday warned that henceforth, no individuals or groups would be allowed to embark on illegal procession in the state.
The latest directive is not unconnected with the protracted crisis rocking the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Mbu handed down the warning in Port Harcourt at a news conference alongside the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6, Jonathan Johnson.
While speaking, the police boss declared that, “As from today, there will be no peaceful or violent procession without applying to the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.
“Anybody who takes the law into his hands and comes out to protest will be arrested and prosecuted.
“The police will use minimum force to make sure that defaulters are picked and prosecuted.”
In his address, the AIG defended Mbu, who was accused of leaving out counter-terrorism personnel from guard duties.
Johnson said Mbu’s action was in order as the personnel were not meant for such purpose.
“The unit is meant to tackle terrorism, so the commissioner decided to replace them with the Special Protection Unit,” Johnson said.
