Rivers: Police rescues Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, 15 others from kidnappers’ den


The Rivers State Police command has rescued more than ten hostages kidnapped around Emohua Local government area along the East-West road.

The Command, in a statement issued by its spokesman, DSP Omoni Nnamdi, said the command is making gains against criminal elements in Rivers State, adding that the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command has been busy combing bushes to clear criminals from their hideouts.

Nnamdi said the rescued hostages were kidnapped from a commercial interstate bus en rout Port Harcourt from Abuja which was hijacked by armed criminals in the state.

He also disclosed that a Deputy Comptroller of Prisons and his family, who were also abducted around Ndele in Emohua Local Government area of the state, were also rescued through a similar operation by officers of the Command.

The Police in Rivers state however said it will not relent in its effort to make the state safe.

According to the statement, “The Commissioner of Police Rivers State Police Command, Cp Francis M Odesanya, in his avowed determination to fight Crime and criminal elements in the state. And whose efforts have been largely successful, again recorded a significant breakthrough in the onslaught against Criminals. This was demonstrated today 8/9/2016 about 1030 am, when the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on credible information combed the bushes in Ndele/Elele Alimini axis of the East-West Road and rescued the following Persons namely, Daniel,Emmanuel Joshua, Oko Utibe, Faith john, Isaac Emmanuel and eight (8) others who were kidnapped on 5th September along the Ndele/Elele axis of the East-West Road.

“They are the passengers on board, God Is God Motors who were on their way from Utako Abuja to Port Harcourt. The hostages were released unconditionally; they have been debriefed and receiving medical attention in the hospital. The hoodlums, who engaged the Police in a gun war, took to flight and are yet to be arrested.

“Efforts are in place to track them.Investigation is on-going at the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU).

“The Command had earlier rescued the Deputy Controller of Prisons, DCP Michael Okorie and his two children ages 10 and 12years who were kidnapped along the same Ndele/ Rumuekpe axis of the East-West Road. The kidnap Victims were rescued unhurt and unconditionally and have since reunited with their families after being debriefed.

“The Commissioner of Police wishes to appeal to the good people of the State to remain steadfast and believe in our ability to make Rivers State safe again. And to continue to share information with us thereby complementing our effort as we combat violent crimes in the State.”
