The Rivers State Police Command has said its officers foiled a major Bank robbery in Port Harcourt.
This was made known by the spokesman of the Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni when he paraded some suspects alleged to have been caught in the act.
Omoni told newsmen that a combined team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad and regular policemen from Rumuolumeni Police Station, who acted on a tip-off, stormed a new generation bank located at Eagle Cement to arrest the suspected hoodlums.
He said the hoodlums opened fire on the advancing police team led by a Divisional Police Officer, Felix Nnebue.
He said the suspects were arrested while they were using a gas cylinder to cut open an entrance into the bank.
“Efforts of the Rivers State Police Command in fighting crime and criminality in the state have again yielded positive result as today 22/12/2016 at about 0200hrs upon a distress call, that there was a robbery going on in a New Generation Bank at Eagle Cement Rumuolumeni, combined teams of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and the men of the Rumuolumeni Police Station led by the DPO CSP Felix Nnebue swiftly responded and mobilized to the scene, where on citing the Police the robbers opened fire on them resulting in an exchange of gunfire at the end of which three of the Armed Robbers were arrested.
“While one of the SARS operatives sustained gunshot wound, he is currently receiving treatment in the Hospital. The armed robbers arrested are: Samuel Nwara, 28 yrs of Igwuruta town, Kaaly Taagaba 28yrs of Kpong Khana LGA and Luky Ukwuoma 26yrs of Etche LGA.
“Items recovered from them include: One cooking gas cylinder, One handsaw. One chisel and Two Ghana must go bags,
“They are helping the Police in the investigation as efforts are on to arrest other fleeing members of the gang and recover their operational weapons.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Francis M. Odesanya wishes to assure the good people of the State that the Command under his watch has vowed to relentlessly fight all manner of Crimes in the State.
“He promises to make Rivers State safer especially during the yuletide period. He, therefore, urges the public to have confidence in the police and continue to share information with the police.”
