Pensioners in Rivers state have given a one week ultimatum to the Rivers state government over non payment of their allowances.
The ultimatum was issued when hundreds of pensioners led a protest to the Government House, Port Harcourt.
The pensioners are protesting the non-payment of their allowances since November 2014.
Chairman of the Association of Rivers state pensioners, Edward Abibo decried the insincerity of the Governor Amaechi led administration, adding that the pensioners held a meeting with the Commissioner for finance which yielded no positive results.
Elder Abibo said many pensioners were being impoverished because of the failure of the Rivers state government’s non-harmonization of pensions from 2003 till date valued at three billion naira.
Some pensioners who chanted anti-government songs, carried placards bearing different messages spoke to our reporter, expressing sadness at what they described as the insensitivity of the government to issues concerning the masses in Rivers state.
Permanent Secretary of Government House, Fortune Oguru who received the protest letter on behalf of the Rivers state government assured the pensioners that their issues were on the mind of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
