The Nigerian Bar Association has called for the total revamping of the Nigerian Judicial system.
The call was made by the National President of the NBA, Augustine Alaeghe in an interview with DailyPost against the backdrop of the current lock down of the Rivers State Judiciary.
He said it was embarrassing for the National Judicial Council, NJC, to have allowed the case of the Rivers state judiciary to continue to linger in the wake of rising insecurity in the country.
He said the vacation embarked upon by the Judges in Rivers State was uncalled for.
“If the NJC, which is the highest decision making body in the Judiciary, if that body has a case in court challenging its decision and that case is sleeping in the court, is that not a serious problem in the judiciary?
“When we have political cases that has 180 days, everyone treats it as a matter of life and death.
“I know courts that sat a day after Christmas. Some of them sat a day after new year.
“And when it involves who is the Chief Judge of Rivers State, the court goes on vacation. Why should they go on vacation?
“What can be more urgent than who becomes the chief Judge of Rivers state?”, he questioned.
The NBA president, said the members of the Bar had consistently engaged the parties involved in the Rivers Judiciary crisis to reconcile their differences in the interest of a proactive justice system, adding that lawyers were being starved.
