Rivers: Gunmen storm viewing centre, kill 3, others injured

Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has again been hit with cult attack with at least three people feared killed and several others with bullet wounds.

A source within Ubima community who confirmed the incident to DAILY POST said suspected cultists invaded the community within the hours of 8:30pm and shot at their targets.

The source said the suspected cultists stormed a viewing centre and opened fire, killing three and left several others with bullet wounds.

He also disclosed that the fate of those who were hit with bullets were still not certain as information coming from the hospitals were worrisome.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident. He, however, said only one person was killed in the shooting.

In the meantime, the Nigerian Army has confirmed the deployment of troops of the Twenty-Nine Battalion and the Anti Robbery Team of Six Division at Sime community in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Deputy Director of Army Public Relations at the Six Division in Port Harcourt, Colonel Aminu Ilyasu said the move followed a tip-off on the activities of cultists in the area.

Colonel Iliyasu said during the operation, troops engaged in gun battle with members of Dey Bam Cult group, led by one SUPREME who has been on the wanted list of Rivers State Government.

The Army spokesman confirmed that the so-called SUPREME was shot during the gun battle and later died of excessive bleeding, while several other members of the cult gang escaped with gunshot wounds.

He disclosed in a statement that one Thankgod Ndunaka was also arrested on suspicion of cultism and handed over to the police for further investigation.

The statement noted that items recovered during the raid included one pistol and ten rounds of ammunition.

Following the development, authorities of the Six Division Headquarters of the Nigerian Army warned that it would henceforth clamp down on persons or groups indulging in any form of criminality within Rivers State and across the entire area of its responsibility.
