Rivers: Group opposes zoning of governorship seat by APC

The Grand Rivers Alliance has rejected moves by the Leadership of the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone its governorship ticket to the Rivers South East Senatorial District.

The group believes that zoning of the gubernatorial ticket will amount to shutting out other eligible candidates in the party.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Director of Communications and strategy of the Grand Rivers Alliance, Comrade Nderigha Ekine, said “it is a breach of the fundamental human rights of eligible contestants from other zones, to be denied the opportunity to aspire.

“In a democracy, every citizen or party man is equal and important and has the right to aspire to any position.

“The recent statement from the State Chairman of the APC saying the party is considering giving its gubernatorial ticket to the Rivers South East Senatorial Zone is unfair.

“In the History of Rivers State, there was never a time the founding fathers of the state sat and agreed that political positions should be zoned”.

He insisted that the only way the party could sweep the polls in the 2015 general elections was to allow a level playing field for all contestants to enable the best candidate emerge.

“The era of sitting down somewhere to anoint candidates against the wish of the people is over”, Ekine maintained.
