An executive bill for the establishment of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital has scaled second reading in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The bill was presented by the House Leader, Martins Amaewhule, who underscored the need to establish another teaching hospital in the state.
The lawmaker noted that the existing tertiary health facilities – which are the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and the Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, are over stretched.
“We cannot continue to rely on UPTH. It is high time we have our own tertiary hospital.
“UPTHA is owned by the Federal Government and it is already over-laboured. That is why the Governor of this state has thought it wise to establish a state of the art hospital that we can call our own”, he stated.
In the debate that followed, some of the lawmakers called for the bill to be returned to the Executive for some adjustment, while others commended the State Government for proposing the bill.
After the second reading, the Speaker of the Assembly, Ikunyi-Owaji Ibani referred the Bill to the House Committees on Health and Education for further action.
