Presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention,NRC, in the aborted Third Republic, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, has condemned the heated political situation in Rivers State.
He has described the unfolding events in the oil-rich state as a threat to sustenance of democracy in the country.
In a statement issued in Kano on Saturday, Tofa said the development was not a good omen in a democratic system.
“The happening in Rivers State is clearly very dangerous, not only to the lives of Governor Amaechi, his family and others, but to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. One wonders where else will be the next after Bayelsa and Rivers, Jigawa, Sokoto, Oyo, Adamawa and Edo’s experiences. This dangerous trend must be stopped immediately,” he stressed.
Tofa further cautioned the President to handle the crisis with all care.
“President Jonathan may be a good man at heart, but he seems to be a very weak leader, who just do what those close to him ask him to do or, may be, even do without his consent, but cannot say or do anything to call them to order.
“There must be a few people around, who must summon the courage to tell him the truth, and one of which is that a day will surely come when he will no longer be in office; in just a few years time, and the law will then catch up with him,” he added.
