Rivers state House of Assembly has approved the request of Governor Nyesom Wike to access N10billion from the federal Governments bailout funds.

Speaker of the House, Dabotorudima Adams announced this after a debate and vote by the lawmakers.

He said the request for the bailout was to enable the governor pay salaries and pensions due to the dwindling federal allocation to the state.

A letter from Governor Wike reads: “With the continuous decline in the Federation account it is now seemingly becoming difficult for us to pay our salaries and pensions. It has therefore become necessary and urgent for the Rivers state government to take advantage of the Federal government bail out funds to enable service our salaries for civil servants and pensions; on this basis we are applying for N10b from the bailout funds.”

Some of the lawmakers who spoke during plenary supported the moves by Governor Wike to access the bailout funds after several months the Federal Government set up the scheme.

Meanwhile, Rivers State House of Assembly has elected two new principal officers of the House.

They include the leader of the House, Martins Amaewhule and the Deputy Whip of the House, Major Jack.

The Speaker charged them to use their wealth of experience to move the Assembly forward.

The newly elected Leader of the House, Martins Amehule said he will ensure that he takes the Assembly to greater heights.
