The Rivers State Chapter of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON has reaffirmed its support for the embattled governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi.
ALGON expressed its support for Amaechi at an event organised by the caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor council, tagged ‘Obio/Akpor Meet the People Tour’.
Speaking on behalf of ALGON, the Chairperson of Ogu-Bolo Local Council, Maureen Tamuno asserted that the chairmen of the 23 councils areas in the state had vowed to remain solidly behind Governor Amaechi.
The association advocated for free and fair election come 2015.
According to her, “I want to assure you that in all the 23 local government areas, Rotimi Amaechi is the only one that can win election. Amaechi has shown us that governance is easy. We are challenging our opponents: when it is time, allow votes to count. We are not afraid of them.”
Also, the Chairman of Asari-Toru council, Flag Amachree condemned the leadership style of the minister of state for Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike.
He said it was unfortunate that Wike had allowed himself to be used to frustrate the administration of his country man, Amaechi.
His words: “You know, at one point in time you can’t go to government house without paying for a cow. What kind of leadership is that. How can an Ikwerre man be bringing down the government of another Ikwerre man. What kind of Ikwerre man is that! He is a very wicked man and he is very greedy too. I know him. Do not allow him to convince you. The truth is that Rotimi Amaechi is a good man. Let us support him”.
In the same vein, the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Tony Okocha affirmed that Amaechi was being haunted because of his achievements.
He noted that since the Governor of the state was bent on not sharing state funds with rival politicians, they had adopted the “pull him down” strategy to force him out of office:
“We have a government that is talk and do and that is the problem the government now has. Because the governor has decided to impact on the lives of the people of Rivers State, it is not the delight of some people that are greedy. We will not join those rascals and never-do-wells. Please continue to support the government of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi”, he pleaded.
In a remark, the Caretaker Chairman of Obio/Akpor, Chikordi Dike said the concept of the tour was to re-orientate the people of the council.
He observed that Local government councils were mandated to be the closest arm of government to the people.
“This administration decided to embark on this meet the people tour to have a close relationship with the communities in Obio/Akpor, to identify areas of needs, to share the problems of the communities,” he said.
It will be recalled that the executives of Obio/Akpor council were suspended by the Rivers State House of Assembly for financial misappropriation and a caretaker committee was subsequently inaugurated by the Rivers State government to run the affairs of the council.
Interestingly, Governor Amaechi was suspended by the leadership of the PDP following his alleged interest in Obio/Akpor.
