Armed men suspected to be members of a cult group, on a reprisal attack, have killed six persons in Ibaa community, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
ThisDay reports that in the early hours of Sunday, the gunmen said to be members of Greenlanders cult group, stormed Ibaa community and allegedly killed six people who were identified as Prince Nyenke, Dirinna, Kpomasiruchi, ThankGod Obisike and two others.
The gunmen were said to have invaded the community in reprisal against a rival cult group, the Icelanders.
A community source, who craved anonymity, told the newspaper that the gunmen laid siege on the community and operated freely without interruption for hours.
The source also explained that the gunmen were moving from house to house in search of the members of the Icelanders, adding that the Greenlanders had chased the Icelanders out of their camp in the community and taken over the place.
Meanwhile, the Caretaker Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, John Wokoma, who visited the affected people, described the situation as pathetic.
Wokoma, while addressing the displaced people of Ibaa community at Rumuji junction, told them to go back to their community.
He promised adequate security for the people of the displaced community.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ahmad Muhammad, DSP, while confirming the incident, said the cult groups clashed in a supremacy battle.
Muhammad also confirmed that three casualties were recorded, but noted that peace has returned to the area.
He said, “It was a supremacy clash between Deygbam and Islander cult groups which left three fatal casualties. Normalcy has since been restored due to police intervention.”
