Auto technicians at the Mechanic Village along OGTV/Ajebo road, Abeokuta on Tuesday staged a protest over the alleged shutdown of their workshop by the Ogun State government.
But Governor Dapo Abiodun said he did not direct any government official to close down any Mechanic Village in the State.
DAILY POST gathered that the mechanics got to work on Tuesday morning but were allegedly prevented from gaining entrance into their workshop by policemen.
“They were seen in their hundreds, standing outside the workshop,” an eyewitness informed.
An auto technician, who pleaded anonymity, said, “they told us the shutdown was a directive from the government through the Internal Revenue Service.
“We learnt that another Mechanic Village in Obada area of Abeokuta and one other had been shut down by agents of the state government.”
It was further gathered that the Ogun State government is demanding their tax clearance for the year.
The development, it was learnt, angered the auto technicians as they reportedly barricaded the main road in a riotous protest.
Contacted, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed to DAILY POST that there was a riot at the Mechanic Village in Ajebo road.
Oyeyemi said policemen had been sent to the scene.
He, however, declined further comments as he said, “no details for now.”
Meanwhile, Gov Abiodun, through his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, denied knowledge of any shutdown of Mechanic villages in the entire Ogun State.
Somorin said, “that Mechanic Villages are shut down is news to me. Gov Dapo Abiodun didn’t order the closure of any Mechanic Village in Ogun State. In fact, the one around my house is open and people are there working. I just left the place a while ago.”
