Revolution Now: Journalists in Cross River protest detention of colleagues

Journalists in Cross River State have protested the detention of their colleague, Nicholas Kalu, by the Cross River State Police Command

The journalists, who is the correspondent of the Nation Newspaper was arrested in the early hours of Monday at the Cultural centre, the purported venue of the RevolutionNow protest alongside two bloggers working with Crossriverwatch in Calabar

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Cross River State Council, Comrade Victor Udu, and other senior members of the union had made frantic efforts to secure the release of the detained journalist but the efforts yielded no positive results.

The Chairman regretted the continued detention of the journalist by the Police saying that the reporter was approaching the venue of the protest with a view to covering the expected protest.

Consequently, the Police, having refused to release their colleague, the journalists mostly correspondents and members of the State Executive Council led by the Chairman, Comrade Victor Udu vowed not to leave the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre until the Police release their colleagues.

At about 9.30pm on Monday, journalists were still waiting for the release of their colleagues even as a top source hinted the group (journalists) that the detained journalist and bloggers would be charged to Magistrate Court One on Tuesday.
