Residents heave sigh of relief as government evacuates corpses in Borno

A resident, Isa Danmusa told DailyPost that, in the last two months, people had vacated the area, including traders and labour workers because corpses were been piled up in the open, within the hospital.

The situation resulted from lack of space in the hospital, he said.

He disclosed that, all the corpses that were brought in were already decomposing and had caused so much problems around the area because of the dangerous odour they generated.

He also said that economic activities in the area had been brought to a halt as a result of the situation.

According to him, “Aside the health hazard, and the negative economic effect, the situation has continued to cause us some psychological trauma.

Also speaking to newsmen on why the corpses have not been evacuated yet, the Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Mustapha Hassan Aminami said the corpses would have been evacuated long before now, but they could not due to some hitches.

He said, now that the corpses have been evacuated, the area would return to its normal state.

While speaking on why the corpses were kept in an open place in the hospital, a staff who did not want his name in print told DailyPost that the morgue in the hospital only has the capacity to house 50 corpses, but with the insecurity situation and killings on daily basis, the morgue could not contain all the corpses.

He said, ” Because there was no space in the morgue, we resorted to keeping them near the morgue with the hope that they would be evacuated in good time, but for our bureaucratic ways of doing things, the authorities could not act in good time until the dead started speaking for themselves and everybody now is worried and calling for the evacuation.”
