Residents demand release of Kogi lawmaker from police custody

Residents of Igalamela/Odolu constituency have appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to order for immediate and unconditional release of Hon Friday Sani, who was arrested on Friday by a team of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.

Hon Sani, a member of Kogi State House of Assembly, who was recently reelected under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party, was said to have been arrested at Nsuka in Enugu state where he went to make purchases in preparation for the community’s annual Odolu festival slated for the next day, Saturday.

Counsel to the lawmaker, John Adele who addressed Journalists at a Press conference held in Lokoja on behalf of the constituency, expressed shock and disappointment in the “gestapo” manner the arrest was conducted.

He equally lamented that the Police used force by firing shots and punctured two tyres of his vehicle before bundling him into their vehicle.

The people complained that the fundamental rights of Hon Sani had been breached as no clear charges had been brought against him.

They denied allegations of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery against the lawmaker, describing them as outright fabrication concocted by politicians who suffered defeat in the last elections.

They recalled that after elections in the past, Friday Sani was arrested severally and released for want of evidence and now the same scenario was being played.

Barrister Adele advised the Nigeria Police not to allow its self to be used by discredited politicians who could not make head way in mobolisation and sensitisation, hence their defeat during elections.

He insisted that the travails of Hon Sani could not only be linked to politics.

Adele asked the police to grant the lawmaker bail as he would not abandoned his people who he is currently representing at the state house of assembly.

“He is an Honourable member of the state Assembly and a law abiding citizen who has never jumped bail despite series of arrests over trump-up charges”, the Lawyer said.
