Rescheduled polls: CAN warns against inciting comments, holds one-day prayer rally

Amidst the raging controversies over the rescheduled 2015 general elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Enugu State chapter, held a one-day prayer rally over the weekend, where it charged Nigerian politicians to place service to the country above self.

The prayer rally, which was held at the Christ Apostolic Church, Idaw-River, Enugu, was attended by all the blocs of CAN in Enugu State.

The CAN Chairman in the State, Rt. Rev. Christian Obiefuna, in his message urged Nigerians to devote much time for prayers to God, who He said would help the country navigate through every storm.

He noted that the theme of the prayer session, “Oh Lord Remember Your People”, was sequel to the present challenges and prospects in the country.

“We must continue in prayers. Prayer is the key; the Bible says we should watch and pray. Note that we are battling against principalities in high and low places.

“I urge those who have not collected their voter’s card to do so; come out at the rescheduled date to exercise your franchise; vote and wait to see that your vote is counted.

“We are not partisan but we are under the political system as stakeholders”, he stated.

While expressing concern over what he called worrisome statements from some politicians and their supporters, Obiefuna requested the political class to eschew violence in the overall interest of the country.

“I encourage all to play the game according to the rule. Maiming and killing or destruction of lives and property will not solve any problem; rather, explore the legal means.

“It is our prayer today that we shall have healthy transition, robust economy, tranquil environment and a God-fearing country, where the people of God shall reign in the strength of His Might”, the CAN chairman added.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Dr Benjamin Eze of the Catholic. Secretariat of Nigeria, Enugu Diocese, called on Christians to make constant prayers for their leaders a point of duty. .
