Reps summons Attorney-General for reopening Kogi Assembly

The House of Representatives on Tuesday, requested that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Abubakar Malami, appears before its Committee on Judiciary over the role he is reportedly playing in the Kogi House of Assembly saga.

Nicholas Ossai, a member of the PDP from Delta State moved a point of order, citing the Attorney General’s order to the Inspector-General of Police to reopen the Assembly for proceedings.

Ossai said that the move was unwarranted and unlawful.

In the same vein, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, described the actions of the Attorney General as sad.

He pointed out that the decision of the house to close down Kogi Assembly was in accordance to Section 11 of the house’s rules.

Pally Iriase, who led the chamber’s delegation to Kogi, noted that the case was not before any lawcourt when the house resolved to take over legislative functions of Kogi Assembly as contained in the Constitution.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara, averred that sensitive matters like that should be treated with seriousness.

On his part, Rep. Muhammadu Bago (Niger-APC) asked the Attorney General to resign, adding that he lacked the power to order the reopening of the Assembly.

The legislators, however, agreed to summon both the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, and Malami to appear before their relevant committees.

They also constituted a 22-member Ad-hoc Committee led by the majority leader to look into the matter and report back in two weeks for further legislative attention.
