A member of the House of Representatives, Christopher Ngoro (PDP, Cross River) has urged the Federal government should commence the mass spraying of mosquitoes to prevent malaria.
The lawmaker asked the federal government to commence the mass spraying of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) to eradicate mosquitoes instead of treating malaria.
He made the call while speaking on a motion moved by Benjamin Bem Mzondu.
DDT, is a colourless, tasteless, and almost odourless crystalline chemical compound, an organochlorine used for killing mosquitoes.
The lawmaker asked the government to take advantage of the insecticide to eradicate malaria instead of spending money on treatment and management.
“Tropical Africa is not the only region where we have had malaria, it has an Italian origin. The malaria bomb was banned in 2005 because of its impact on insect and environment. But the ban has been lifted, we can apply for the spray of the DDT.
“South Africa now has reduced its malaria to 1% through the use of DDT.”
The House, therefore, resolved to ask the FG to declare a state of emergency on Malaria.
