Reps react to alleged plot to shift resumption of plenary to October 12

Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, has reacted to allegations that the leadership of the National Assembly under Senator Bukola Saraki and Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara have perfected plans to shift full resumption of lawmakers to October 12.

Both chambers of the National Assembly had embarked on annual recess to resume on September 23.

However, strong indications emerged yesterday that the leadership of both chambers intend to extend the resumption of plenary beyond the initial agreed date to enable members to participate in their party’s primaries.

According to the timetable released by INEC, party primaries for the presidential, Governorship, Federal and State Assembly elections would run between August 18 and October 7, 2018.

Speaking on the alleged plot to shift full resumption to October 12, the House of Reps spokesman told Punch Newspaper that lawmakers would follow the directive of their leadership on the matter.

According to him, “This matter is not for speculation. Committees have started working and it is hoped that they will conclude soon and produce their reports.

“Lawmakers will support whatever the National Assembly leadership decides after the various committees have turned in their reports on the 2019 polls budget, virement proposals and Eurobond request by President Buhari, so long as it aligns with parliamentary procedure.

“Instead of the spins and twists that we hear every day, especially on the social media, let us allow the parliamentary procedure to follow through, ” he said.
