Reps commiserates with APC over Okrika attack, calls for non-partisan security

The National Assembly has called on candidates seeking elective positions in next month’s general elections to put their supporters under control.

The call was made when some members of the National Assembly paid a visit to the Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Dakuku Peterside over the incident that happened in Okrika last week.

Leader of the Assembly delegation, and member representing Owan East and West Federal Constituency in Edo State, Palley Iriase said the House of Representatives was unhappy with political developments in Rivers state.

Iriase told newsmen that the visit to Rivers state was also meant to show solidarity with Dakuku and his Deputy, Honourable Asita who are also members of the House of Representatives.

Condemning the Okrika attack, Pally Iriase urged security agencies to protect Nigerians rather than doing the bidding of greedy politicians.

According to him, “As our friend and colleague we needed to come to commiserate with him. We needed to come and show him some love and our concern for his safety and the safety of the general populace of Rivers state.

“When we heard that in his course to go to Okrika local government to canvass for votes, explosives were detonated, shots were fired, a lot of his followers were wounded and a police man died, we came to express the abhorrence of the House of Representatives to the trend of violence that is rearing its head in this political dispensation.

“Our advise is for the police force and other law enforcement agents is to know that their allegiance should be to Nigerians. And by that, they should be serious defenders of the constitution and the Law. if the this is done no matter who you are, you will be afraid to do the wrong things.

“We are encouraging the security operative to have the will to always do the right things.”

In his response, the APC guber candidate, Dakuku Peterside highlighted the challenges of the party in Rivers state, noting that the security agencies were yet to make any meaningful arrest of those attacking APC faithful in the state.

Recall that Hon. Robinson Uwak, a Federal Lwamaker from Akwa Ibom state had moved a motion calling on the House of Representatives to look into the Okrika APC incident. .
