The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has berated Hon. Dakuku Peterside for his comments on the planned repeal of the Rivers State Reserve Fund Law.
Spokesman of the PDP in Rivers State, Samuel Wonosike while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt said Peterside had failed to come to terms with the current reality.
Dakuku Peterside, a Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2015 general elections had in a statement condemned plans to repeal the Rivers State reserve fund No 2 of 2005.
Peterside, who is also the Director General of NIMASA in a statement by his media team, said it was worrisome that governor Nyesom wike was seeking to repeal the reserve fund law when countries of the world were working hard to secure a sustainable future for their people through increased saving.
However, Wonosike said Peterside should concentrate on achieving set objectives in NIMASA and stop meddling into the affairs of the Rivers State Government.
Wonosike argued that there was a need to repeal the Reserve Fund Law.
Wonosike said, “What are you reserving when there is no money? How can you save when there is no money? We are hearing that there are states that are owing up to 10 months salary and you are talking about saving. How is that possible?
“Dakuku Peterside is merely looking for avenues to remain relevant in the politics of Rivers state.
“The Rivers state has been battling with short funds. The state has struggled to make sure projects are done, that salary are paid despite paucity of funds and a man like Dakuku who does not understand how government works will just come out with baseless statements.
“It is a common knowledge that a man should save when he has surplus.
“For your information, this Law was passed when Rotimi Amaechi was Governor. What did he do with the money that he saved at the end of the day? He took all the money just when he was about to leave office in 2015. He deceived the Rivers people with this idea of saving.
“Fortunately for us, we have a Governor who has the interest of the people at heart. Governor Nyesom Wike is not out to deceive the people.
“But be rest assured that when we begin to have surplus funds, Governor Wike will save. ”
In the meantime, the Rivers state House of Assembly has referred the Rivers state Reserve Fund Amendment Bill , 2017 to the House Committee on Public Accounts for further action.
Speaker of the House, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani referred the Bill after an exhaustive debate on the floor of the House.
