The Federal Government has been asked to remove the Sure-P federal task force from Lagos roads for disturbing the peace being enjoyed in the state.
The call was made by two human rights groups in Lagos State, Civil Rights Agenda and Lagos Peace Initiatives, adding that the task force should rather be sent to the Apapa Ports and other Federal Government establishments where their services will be needed.
The groups made the call at a joint news briefing in Lagos.
Speaking on the issue, an activist, Segun Adamolekun of Civil Rights Agenda, said the peace and security being enjoyed in the state could be destroyed by the federal task force if their activities continued unchecked.
He said: “Where did they derive the authority and powers to control and manage traffic from when there are the Federal Road Safety Corps, Traffic Policemen and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials, who are created by law?
“Why is it always that when election is around the corner, these strange men in black come around to disturb the peace of Lagos? We have not recorded their presence in Ogun State, neither in Osun, Adamawa, Abuja nor Kaduna.
“Why is it only in Lagos, the economic and commercial heartbeat of Nigeria, that such an illegality would be condoned? This is the more reason the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the chief law enforcement officer of the nation should prosecute these strange men in Lagos.”
Also speaking, Gloria Anozie of Lagos Peace Initiatives said the relative peace in Lagos should not be compromised on the altar of politics.
She said: “As we gradually approach the month of elections, we passionately appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan to call these strange men, who claim they are product of Federal Government Sure-P to order.”
