Remembering Sen. Dantong/Hon. Fulani: The new peace is the best honour for them – Hon. Dabwan


The relative peace being experienced in the so called flash points in the Northern Senatorial District of Plateau State, especially in Berom community which hitherto has been ravaged by civil unrest, has been described as a mark of respect and honor to late Senator Gyang Dantong and Hon Gyang James Fulani who died on the 8th of July last year.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Clark Dabwan to mark the first year anniversary of the death of the two Lawmakers.

It would be recalled that, the two lawmakers lost their lives during the burial rites of 68 members of their constituencies who were killed by unknown gunmen in Masei, Riyom local government of Plateau state in July last year.

They were the most senior Lawmakers of Berom ethnic group, representing their people at the national and state Assemblies respectively, until they met their untimely death in the course of sectarian violence that rocked Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South Local Government Areas.

Both were replaced by Senator Gyang Pwajok and Keneng Gyang Fulani respective through a bye election, held on October, 6, 2012.

Commenting on the first year anniversary, he said, “These Legislators died this same time last year in the struggle to restore peace in their constituencies. They were consumed in the violence they were trying to stop.

Adding that, “But we thank God today there is absolute peace in the entire Berom land. I want to use this opportunity to appreciate the Berom people, I see the current peace as the best respect and honour the Berom people can accord their late law makers.

Dabwan maintained that, “These leaders made supreme sacrifice to ensure that peace reigns in Plateau state and Berom land. I want to therefore enjoin Berom people to maintain this respect for their legislators who died for peac. They should ensure this peace is sustained and made permanent.

“Though, we missed our majority leader, his wife who replaced him from his constituency has made a good replacement and she is equally making quality contribution.

Assuring that, “The Plateau State House of Assembly will continue to remember him for his sincerity, honesty and integrity”.
